Sprouts in the City Episode 2

When you live in a climate that has cool springs it’s important to start your plants inside, as it allows for a longer growing season. Some plants like tomatoes and squash need a lot of time to grow and mature before they produce fruit, which is the main reason I like to start my tomatoes inside. The reward is that you get fruit from your tomatoes by June or July instead of August or September. And, if you just cant wait for fresh tomatoes, there’s no harm in buying one mature plant from a garden store in the spring. They can get expensive though!

This year was the first year that I bought seed starter kits to start my seeds inside. The past few years I merely used old jars or small planters and it worked, so don’t feel like you need anything more than soil water and seeds! Well you also need some sunlight, so make sure there’s space in your sunniest window. Other things I like to start inside are peas, beans, peppers, cucumbers and herbs. Root vegetables and leafy greens are best if directly sown into the soil as root veggies don’t transplant well and leafy greens grow quickly! Starting what you can inside is a great way to get excited for spring time when you can start direct sowing.
